ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Baltimore Orioles’ nine-game West Coast road trip concluded on a disappointing note Friday as they fell to the Los Angeles Angels 7-6 in 10 innings at Angel Stadium. Baltimore had been positioned to finish the trip strong, having secured back-to-back series wins earlier in the week.
The Orioles held a three-run lead entering the eighth inning, but their bullpen faltered, allowing Los Angeles to erase the deficit. Despite the setback, Baltimore regained a one-run advantage in the 10th inning, with reliever Keegan Akin tasked with closing out the game. Akin, who has primarily pitched in low-pressure situations this season, appeared poised to secure the victory when he induced a ground ball from Nolan Schanuel with two outs and the tying run on third base.
However, a miscue in the field changed the outcome. First baseman Pete Alonso, positioned deep, moved toward the ball instead of the base, complicating the play. Akin’s throw to second base, intended to end the game, was dropped, allowing the tying run to score and the go-ahead runner to advance to third.
The Angels capitalized moments later. Logan O’Hoppe laid down a dribbler near home plate, and catcher Samuel Basallo attempted a tag on Schanuel rather than throwing to first. Schanuel evaded the tag and crossed home plate to deliver a walk-off victory for Los Angeles.
Baltimore’s loss drops their road trip record to 4-5, a disappointing finish after a stretch of promising performances. The team will return home facing a pivotal stretch of their regular season.
