Authorities recovered a missing Arizona girl last week at a homeless encampment in Olympia, Washington, nearly 1,500 miles from her home. The child had been reported missing from Mesa, Arizona, and was suspected to be a victim of sex trafficking.
The case came to light on June 18 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted law enforcement that the girl had last been seen in Olympia and might be exploited. Following this tip, authorities focused their search on an area known locally as “The Jungle,” a sprawling 20-acre homeless encampment notorious for crime and violence.
Federal and local agencies collaborated during the operation, which culminated in the child’s recovery on Thursday. The acting U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Washington, Donrien Stephens, emphasized the priority of protecting children nationwide in a statement regarding the case.
While the circumstances surrounding the child’s disappearance remain unclear, no arrests have been reported in connection to the incident. The recovered girl has been placed under the care of the Olympia Police Department and the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families as officials continue their investigation.
