A 21-year-old man was found dead in Lake Lanier in Georgia after disappearing while swimming on Saturday afternoon, authorities reported. Terrell Shelton was swimming with friends near Robinson Park when he suddenly went missing, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the sheriff’s office, Shelton was attempting to swim to an island with a group when he disappeared from view. His friends initially believed he had submerged underwater and would resurface, but he did not reappear. Search efforts continued throughout the evening, and shortly before midnight, Shelton’s body was located at a depth of approximately 14 feet. Recovery was carried out using a remotely operated underwater vehicle.
Lake Lanier, a large reservoir created in the 1950s after the flooding of several towns, forests, and cemeteries, has a history marked by numerous drownings. Since 1994, more than 200 fatalities have been reported in its waters. The lake’s unsettling reputation has been fueled by local lore and its portrayal as a haunting backdrop in the Netflix series “Ozark.”
Shelton’s drowning represents the seventh fatality reported in Lake Lanier this year. Authorities confirmed that the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
