A one-year-old boy was killed and a woman critically injured after a Mississippi police officer opened fire on a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot during an attempted stop related to alleged theft. The incident occurred in Senatobia when officers approached a car carrying the child’s mother and aunt, who were reportedly fleeing after stealing diapers.
According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated toward one of the officers, nearly striking them. In response, an officer fired at the car. Kohen Wiley, the toddler, who was being held by his mother in the front passenger seat, was fatally shot. Another woman in the vehicle sustained critical injuries, though it has not been confirmed whether she was the child’s mother or aunt.
Kohen’s family provided details indicating that the child was with his mother while his aunt was driving at the time of the shooting. The circumstances leading to the chase and shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not released further information regarding the ongoing inquiry.
The incident has raised questions about the use of force in the situation, and officials have yet to comment beyond the initial statements from the Department of Public Safety.
