South Sydney Rabbitohs have confirmed that Latrell Mitchell will be sidelined for up to four weeks after sustaining a grade two calf strain during training on Monday. Initially expected to miss approximately two weeks, the injury was later revealed to be more severe and linked to a previous back problem, prompting an extended recovery period.
The club said Mitchell’s absence would rule him out of upcoming National Rugby League (NRL) matches against Parramatta, Penrith, Newcastle, and Canberra. This development compounds South Sydney’s challenges this season, with several key players already sidelined by soft-tissue injuries. Centre Campbell Graham remains out with a calf strain, while Brandon Smith and David Fifita have experienced lengthy spells on the sidelines due to calf and hamstring issues, respectively. Young winger Talaanoa Penetilam, who made a strong impression with two tries on debut, is also out until round 26 after suffering a hamstring injury.
Mitchell’s injury carries significant ramifications beyond club level. The NSW State of Origin side faces uncertainty ahead of the third and deciding match at Suncorp Stadium in two weeks. Mitchell had been poised for a potential recall to the Blues after the Parramatta game on Thursday, but he was forced to leave training early due to calf tightness. His withdrawal from contention leaves room for other centres to vie for selection, including Newcastle’s Bradman Best, Steve Crichton, and possibly Tom Trbojevic.
Meanwhile, NSW five-eighth James Tedesco addressed speculation about his position after being substituted with 10 minutes remaining in the recent match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The 31-year-old clarified that the substitution was tactical rather than fitness-related and emphasized that his place in the squad was not guaranteed despite a team victory. “You win a game, it doesn’t mean your spot’s safe,” Tedesco said. “If Loz wants to go with me, I’m ready to go.” He added that he felt physically strong and was adhering to the coach’s decisions throughout the game.
There is some positive news for South Sydney with the anticipated return of centre Jack Wighton, who is recovering from a broken arm and may be available for selection as early as next week. The Rabbitohs are hopeful to have Mitchell back in time for their final push toward the NRL finals, where they aim to end a 12-year premiership drought.
