A 25-year-old man died after being attacked by a mob following an alleged stabbing incident involving a local political leader in Rajapur union, Bhola district, on Saturday evening.
The deceased, Md Asif, son of Md Dhalu Howlader of Medua village in Rajapur, reportedly had a dispute with Md Hossain Majhi, president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) Ward-7 unit, during a local arbitration at Ananda Bazar. Eyewitnesses and locals said that during the altercation, Asif stabbed Hossain before fleeing the scene.
Hossain was immediately taken to Bhola Sadar Hospital for initial treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred first to a hospital in Barishal and subsequently to a facility in Dhaka for advanced care.
Following reports about the stabbing, rumors circulated in the area that Hossain had died. This led to a mob beating Asif at Janata Bazar. Police intervened and took Asif into custody, subsequently admitting him to Bhola Sadar Hospital around 8:45 p.m. Asif later died while undergoing treatment, according to Mohammad Mamun, the on-duty police officer.
Md Shajahan Bepari, president of the Rajapur Union BNP, confirmed that Asif was beaten by locals after the incident. Meanwhile, Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bhola Model Police Station, stated that no formal case had been filed in connection with the events as of the latest update.
