Pierce Brosnan and Dame Helen Mirren returned to their roles as Conrad and Maeve Harrigan in the second season of the crime drama series "MobLand," which continues to explore the complexities and power struggles within the Harrigan family empire. The new season delves deeper into the challenges they face from adversaries both inside and outside their organization, portraying a tense and intricate battle for control.

Conrad Harrigan, played by Brosnan, remains determined to maintain his position as the head of the family, even as his son Kevin, portrayed by Paddy Considine, attempts to undermine him. Meanwhile, Maeve, brought to life by Mirren, has been secretly grooming Eddie (Anson Boon), Conrad’s half-son and Kevin’s surrogate son, as her protégé and business partner. The family dynamics are further complicated by the presence of Harry Da Souza, the Harrigans’ fixer and consigliere, played by Tom Hardy, whose loyalty is uncertain.

A significant external threat emerges in the form of Kat McAllister, a Boston-based crime boss portrayed by Janet McTeer, who is joined by her enforcer, Frankie Cooper (Johnny Flynn). Both Brosnan and Mirren acknowledged the impact of McTeer’s character on the season’s tension, with Brosnan describing Kat as possessing a “stiletto, cold, chisel-like presence.” Mirren expressed enthusiasm about McTeer’s addition to the cast, calling it “fabulous” to have her join the ensemble.

Both lead actors highlighted the strength of the series’ writing, attributing much of the show’s appeal to the scripts penned by acclaimed playwright Jez Butterworth. Mirren called Butterworth’s involvement “an unbelievable honor,” noting the excitement actors feel when new scripts arrive, presenting fresh and challenging material to perform. Brosnan praised director Guy Ritchie’s approach, saying Ritchie encouraged him to fully embrace the character’s Irish roots and intensity, offering the freedom to explore the role in unexpected ways.

Regarding her role, Mirren emphasized Maeve’s unpredictability, describing the character as “impulsive, reckless, and unburdened by self-consciousness,” which allows her creative freedom in performance. Brosnan reflected on Conrad’s upbringing steeped in violence and his complex feelings of pride and respect toward his sons’ ambitions.
