ZURICH — American pole vaulter Hana Moll secured victory at the Zurich Diamond League women’s pole vault competition, held on August 26 inside Zurich Main Station. Moll cleared a personal best height of 4.90 meters to claim first place, edging out Switzerland’s Angelica Moser, who took second with a season-best 4.85 meters.

The 21-year-old former junior world champion was the only competitor to clear 4.90 meters in the event arranged as a city meet in the heart of Zurich. Moll had previously finished equal sixth alongside her twin sister Amanda at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

Moser, a two-time European champion and twice a world indoor bronze medallist, drew strong local support but ultimately fell just short. She failed three attempts at 4.90 meters, while Moll succeeded on her opening try. Moser’s clearance at 4.85 meters matched her season best but placed her second behind Moll.

Moll, who encountered early struggles with two misses each at 4.50 and 4.65 meters, described the experience as tough but rewarding. “It was just survival at the beginning, but to get my personal best was incredible,” she said. She also praised the event’s atmosphere, calling it “the most amazing crowd I’ve ever vaulted in front of.”

The competition began with a field of ten vaulters. Swiss athlete Lea Bachmann failed to register a height after three unsuccessful attempts, exiting the event early. At 4.75 meters, three competitors—American Emily Grove, New Zealander Eliza McCartney, and France’s Marie-Julie Bonnin—also failed and settled for 4.65 meters as their final mark.

Six remaining athletes cleared 4.75 meters and attempted 4.85 meters, each incurring at least one miss. Aside from Moll and Moser, the group included New Zealand’s Imogen Ayris, Slovenian Tina Sutej, and Americans Katie Moon, the reigning three-time world champion, and Sandi Morris. Morris passed after two failed attempts before successfully clearing 4.75 meters, ultimately sharing third place with Moon.

At 4.90 meters, Moll cleared on her first attempt, cementing her lead. Moser’s three misses at that height ended her bid for gold. Morris and Moon both cleared 4.75 meters but failed to advance beyond that, finishing tied for third. Sutej and Ayris dropped out after unsuccessful attempts at 4.85 meters and settled for fifth and sixth place respectively.

The Zurich Diamond League’s main track and field events are scheduled to continue at Letzigrund Stadium on August 27.
