A week-long culinary festival celebrating Nepalese and Himalayan cuisine is currently underway at Imperial Kitchen in Al Khuwair, Oman. “The Momos Edition” began on July 26 and will continue through August 1, 2026, offering a variety of traditional and fusion-style dumplings known as momos.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Nepal and was officially inaugurated by Bishesh Kumar Sah, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Nepal, during a ceremony held at the restaurant. Following the opening, attendees were invited to sample a selection of handcrafted momos prepared by Executive Chef Shiva Datta Acharya, a Nepalese culinary specialist recognized for his expertise in Himalayan cuisine.
Chef Shiva highlighted the focus on tandoori momos, a variation in which the dumplings are first steamed, then marinated in tandoori masala, and subsequently cooked in a traditional tandoor oven. The festival’s menu features a wide range of momo preparations including steamed, fried, pan-fried, and signature gourmet varieties, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available. All dishes are made using authentic recipes and high-quality ingredients.
Himalayan culinary traditions emphasize the use of mountain-grown herbs and spices such as Timur (Sichuan pepper), Jambu (an aromatic herb), and Bhangjeera (perilla seeds), combined with pure rock salt. While conventional Himalayan flavors typically incorporate black pepper, cumin, and cinnamon, the festival introduces an Indian fusion element through the tandoori cooking technique.
The Momos Edition aims to offer residents and visitors in Oman an immersive experience of Nepal’s diverse culinary heritage, highlighting both traditional and innovative interpretations of this popular Himalayan dish.
