In a dramatic conclusion at Santa Ana Stadium on Friday night, Mater Dei secured a 36-35 comeback victory over St. John Bosco, sealing second place in the Trinity League and positioning themselves for a likely No. 3 seed in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. The decisive moment came with 7.5 seconds remaining when sophomore tight end Tyler Fritz caught a two-point conversion pass from freshman quarterback Paytyn Guess, securing the win after a brief bobble.

St. John Bosco appeared to have the game under control after Maliq Allen scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 4:35 remaining, putting the Braves ahead 35-21. However, Guess, making his mark in just his first season, orchestrated two rapid scoring drives in under two minutes. He first connected with Gavin Honore on a 55-yard touchdown catch with 3:26 left. Following a defensive stop that forced St. John Bosco to punt, Guess launched a 49-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Tristan Brown with 13 seconds left. Brown, who has been close friends with Guess since they were six years old, outjumped defenders to secure the catch.

Mater Dei coach Raul Lara praised the chemistry between his young stars. "We’ve got a pretty talented freshman group. The quarterback is fantastic. He’s dynamic. And he’s just learning. And Tristan is awesome. They’ve been playing together for a long time. So they have chemistry," Lara said.

Instead of settling for a tie, Mater Dei chose to complete the comeback with a two-point conversion. Fritz, initially running to the right, cut left and found open space behind the line to catch Guess’s pass for the lead. Fritz described the play as "awesome" and credits communication with Guess for the success. "I could have given him an easier pass," Guess noted of the final throw. "Tyler made a great play."

St. John Bosco’s quarterback, Koa Malau’ulu, finished with an impressive 24-of-35 passing for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Despite their strong second-half effort and four sacks—including two by Kekoa Peko—the Braves were unable to hold off Mater Dei’s late surge. Brown had four receptions for 104 yards, while Guess went 11-of-15 passing for 214 yards and three touchdowns.

The game featured numerous momentum swings. Mater Dei capitalized early on a St. John Bosco fumble on the first play, leading to an early Guess touchdown run. Both teams traded scores, including long touchdown plays and multiple penalties against St. John Bosco that hindered their drives, such as penalties for sideline interference, taunting, and a face mask that nullified a fumble recovery.

Lara commended his team’s resilience, telling players after the win, "If you stick together, no one can beat you."

The game also marked a shift in the regional high school football landscape. For the first time since 2015, neither Mater Dei nor St. John Bosco will be seeded No. 1 for the Division 1 playoffs, a distinction expected to go to Santa Margarita (10-0). Under second-year coach Carson Palmer, whose NFL pedigree and recruiting have elevated the program, Santa Margarita is emerging as the dominant force in Southern California high school football. Playoff seedings will be officially released Sunday morning.
