Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery each reached 30 home runs for the season as the Chicago White Sox secured a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night at Rate Field. Vargas opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, while Montgomery added a two-run shot in the fourth. The performance marked the first time in franchise history that two White Sox teammates hit their 30th home runs in the same game.

Vargas, who had not homered since August 21, finished the day with 30 home runs and 30 doubles, becoming one of only three primary third basemen in White Sox history to reach both milestones in a single season. Montgomery, 24, also joined an exclusive group as the third player in franchise history age 24 or younger to record 30 or more home runs and at least 80 RBIs in a season, alongside Frank Thomas and Bill Melton. Montgomery currently has 81 RBIs this year.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Vargas said of reaching the milestone. “I know how hard it is and I’ve been working very hard. (To) achieve one of these moments, it means a lot for me for sure.” Montgomery echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the dedication required to reach such heights. “You dream of all this stuff and you try to prepare for all this stuff. Going out there and making it happen is not easy by any means,” he said. “Doing it on the same night and being able to share with Vargas is awesome.”

The White Sox improved their standing in the American League Central with the win, moving to 74-67 and maintaining a 2½-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, who won both games of their doubleheader against Detroit later the same day. The Sox’s offense powered the team with three home runs in total while pitcher Erick Fedde contributed a strong outing, delivering five scoreless innings with three hits allowed, two strikeouts, and two walks.

Twins starter Zebby Matthews, who had pitched a near-perfect game against Chicago just last week, gave up four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk over five innings. The early runs provided by Vargas and Montgomery appeared to give Fedde and the White Sox a comfortable cushion to work with.

Manager Will Venable praised the offensive achievement while noting the importance of moving beyond the milestone as the team pushes forward. “It’s really cool, a special season really by all our offense,” Venable said. “Sitting on 29, I’m sure they’re thinking about it a little bit. So great to see it. Now they can move past it and continue to hit.”

The White Sox will look to build on the momentum as they continue their three-game series against the Twins.
