Former New York Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson is set to reopen a prominent Albany establishment known as the War Room Tavern, a popular gathering spot for state politicians and lobbyists. The venue, which closed in March, will relaunch in November under the new name Mookie Wilson’s Legacy BBQ at The War Room.

Wilson, a Baseball Hall of Famer, has expanded his Legacy BBQ brand, a mobile-catering business he launched three years ago. The venture had already attracted a dedicated following prior to the upcoming brick-and-mortar opening. The reopening was facilitated after Todd Shapiro, a New York political consultant and partner in the new operation, proposed turning the former tavern into a permanent base for Legacy BBQ.

“This is a real save for Albany,” Shapiro said in a press statement, highlighting the significance of reviving a local venue that historically served as a hub for the state’s political community. The new restaurant aims to combine the political heritage of the original War Room Tavern with Wilson’s growing barbecue brand.

The War Room Tavern had long been known as a social center for lawmakers and political operatives within Albany’s governmental landscape. Its closure earlier this year left a notable void in the city’s hospitality scene connected to state politics. The relaunch under Wilson’s leadership is expected to restore that dynamic while introducing a fresh culinary offering.

Mookie Wilson and his family have expressed enthusiasm about the next chapter for Legacy BBQ and the War Room space, blending their experience in catering with Albany’s unique political culture. The reopening is scheduled for November and could become a new fixture for both local diners and the state’s political network.
