Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has introduced a new electronic system to facilitate the controlled medicine permit process for travelers entering or leaving the country. Announced on Wednesday, the system allows passengers to apply online for prior authorization to carry controlled medications for personal use, monitor their application progress, and receive the permit electronically.

The initiative is designed to streamline procedures and enhance the user experience while maintaining strict pharmaceutical oversight. According to MoPH, the platform provides a clear and flexible mechanism for travelers to comply with legal and health regulations governing the transportation of controlled substances before their journey. The measure also aims to bolster pharmaceutical control protocols to protect public health.

Accompanying the system launch, MoPH released a guidance booklet detailing how to use the electronic platform. The booklet outlines the application process, necessary documentation, including valid prescriptions, and clarifies the list of controlled medicines subject to regulation.

Applications submitted through the system are reviewed by the Ministry’s Department of Pharmacy and Drug Control and are approved or denied within three working days after the submission of all required materials. Travelers are advised to initiate their applications at least five working days prior to their travel dates to ensure timely processing.

This development is part of MoPH’s broader strategy to automate public health services, aligning with Qatar’s National Health Strategy priorities, particularly the goal of establishing a more efficient and resilient healthcare system. The electronic permit system is integrated with the National Authentication System and is accessible via MoPH’s official website.

By digitizing the permit process, MoPH seeks to facilitate faster, more efficient service delivery while upholding stringent regulatory controls over controlled medicines carried by travelers.
