KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Ministry anticipates increased budget allocations in the upcoming 2027 Budget to support the development of the national sports sector, including athletes, coaches, and youth programs. The budget proposals are set to be unveiled today.

Minister Dr. Taufiq Johari expressed optimism that the new funding would enhance the sports ecosystem across the country while prioritising the welfare of athletes throughout their careers and into retirement. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive support systems to ensure athletes’ well-being beyond their active participation in sports.

“Our aim is for the Budget to deliver positive outcomes for all stakeholders in the sports community, enabling Malaysia to continue excelling on the regional and international stage,” Dr. Taufiq said during a recent radio interview.

The ministry also plans to continue efforts focused on youth development, particularly targeting young people currently outside of employment, education, or training, as well as other vulnerable groups. These initiatives are intended to promote broader social inclusion and drive engagement through sports and related activities.

Regarding the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games scheduled to be hosted in Malaysia in 2027, the minister refrained from detailing specific budget requests ahead of the official presentation. However, he assured that the ministry is committed to delivering a smoothly organised event that will rank among the best editions of the Games.

Details on the total budget allocation and the breakdown of funding for the SEA Games are expected to be disclosed during the budget announcement. Malaysia last hosted the SEA Games in 2017, and the upcoming edition is viewed as a significant opportunity to showcase the country’s sporting capabilities and organisational expertise.

The government’s focus on enhanced funding for sports aligns with broader national goals to strengthen youth engagement, improve athletic performance, and raise Malaysia’s profile in the international sports arena.
