Solar power contributed a record share of Great Britain’s electricity supply in July, according to data from the National Energy System Operator. Solar farms and rooftop installations provided 14.4 percent of the country’s electricity during the month, surpassing the previous high of 12.4 percent recorded in May.
The increase reflects both favorable weather conditions and a growing number of households installing solar panels to reduce their energy costs. July’s sunny weather supported higher electricity generation from solar sources, demonstrating the sector’s expanding role in the country’s energy mix.
The rise in solar power usage aligns with broader trends toward renewable energy integration as Great Britain continues efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy self-sufficiency. The data underscores the growing contribution of decentralized solar generation alongside utility-scale solar farms.
While solar power accounted for the largest share of electricity supply seen so far, it still represents a portion of the overall energy portfolio, which includes wind, nuclear, natural gas, and other sources. As more consumers adopt solar technology, the capacity to generate distributed renewable energy is expected to rise further.
The National Energy System Operator noted that the growth in solar output is part of ongoing seasonal variability, with summer months typically producing higher levels due to increased sunlight. However, the record achieved in July signals notable progress in the adoption and effectiveness of solar generation across Great Britain’s grid.
