The Department for Education (DfE) announced plans to expand free breakfast clubs in schools, with an additional 1,400 institutions expected to participate in the scheme during the upcoming academic year. Starting in September, the total number of schools offering these clubs will exceed 2,700, potentially benefiting over 680,000 children, more than double the current 300,000 attendees.

The initiative, which began last summer, has provided more than 10 million free breakfasts to pupils so far. Officials emphasized that the program could help families save up to £450 annually while offering an estimated 95 hours of additional childcare per year.

Alongside the school breakfast expansion, the Government unveiled proposals aimed at improving support for disadvantaged two-year-olds. These plans encourage local authorities to channel more funding directly to nurseries and childminders, enhancing early childhood education access for vulnerable children.

The move forms part of broader efforts to reduce childcare costs and support families, addressing financial pressures faced by many households. The Department for Education stated that the increased availability of free breakfast clubs and targeted funding for early years providers are key steps toward these objectives.
