Since opening last month at the British Museum, the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition has attracted significant public attention, though not without operational challenges. Due to overwhelming demand, visitors have reported long queues, limited viewing time, and occasionally being turned away despite holding tickets. In response, the museum announced a series of changes set to take effect this week aimed at improving visitor experience.
The adjustments include extended opening hours, additional seating for those waiting in line, improved signage to reduce congestion, and the introduction of an audio guide. The museum also stated plans to implement further measures to address lengthy queues, though details have yet to be released.
Currently, the exhibition operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and extends until 9 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. These hours are constrained by conservation requirements, as the 1,000-year-old embroidery—technically an embroidery, not a tapestry—must be protected from extended light exposure. To preserve the delicate artifact, lighting remains dim, and visitors are allowed 40-minute time slots. A one-way route is enforced, with staff and recorded announcements encouraging visitors to keep moving through the display.
Since the exhibition’s opening on September 10, some adjustments have already been made. For instance, the use of mobile phones, initially permitted, was prohibited just days after the launch to enhance visitor flow. Despite such measures, instances of overcrowding and waiting persist. Jennifer Kennedy and Emily Prescott described being admitted at their scheduled time but then waiting nearly two hours in an area without seating or restroom facilities before entering the exhibition.
International visitors have voiced frustration as well. Nick Bubnovich, 79, who traveled from Atlanta, Georgia, noted he queued for 50 minutes after his 1 p.m. ticketed entry but only had about 30 minutes to view the display. “The leadership here sold way, way too many tickets,” he said, adding that the crowded conditions and pressure to keep moving detracted from the experience.
Standard adult tickets are priced at £33, with a reduced rate of £27 during off-peak hours, and free entry for under-16s accompanied by an adult. The museum has not specified how the extended hours will reconcile with the need to limit light exposure to the textile.
The British Museum acknowledged the unprecedented level of interest and expressed a commitment to enhancing visitor flow and experience through the new measures. However, with demand continuing to outpace capacity, managing visitor access remains a work in progress.
