More than 300 candidates have registered to contest seats on Hong Kong’s Election Committee as the nomination period officially opened. The body, which consists of 1,500 members, is responsible for selecting the city’s chief executive in March 2027.
The nomination window for various subsectors will remain open until October 20, with the Election Committee election scheduled for November 22. The 1,500-member committee includes 982 members elected by subsector voters, 362 ex officio members, and 156 members nominated by designated bodies.
On the first day of nominations, the Registration and Electoral Office received 305 candidacies, alongside two nominations from designated bodies proposing members for the committee. Candidates represent a broad spectrum of professional and social sectors.
Among those filing nominations were established figures and local leaders from multiple subsectors. Clement Chan Kam-wing, chairman of the Consumer Council, is bidding for a seat in the accountancy subsector. He emphasized his intention to promote Hong Kong’s status as an international financial center.
In the engineering subsector, Wai Chi-sing, a former managing director of the Urban Renewal Authority, advocated for improved coordination between development in the Northern Metropolis and the city’s older urban districts, highlighting the next chief executive’s need to address this integration.
A 15-member team featuring notable personalities such as acclaimed filmmaker Derek Yee Tung-sing and Hong Kong table tennis coach Li Ching is competing in the sports, performing arts, culture and publication subsector. When asked about potential support for incumbent Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu should he seek a second term, team members refrained from giving a clear response, stating they would discuss the future later.
In the labour subsector, the Federation of Trade Unions submitted 46 candidates, including former legislators Aron Kwok Wai-keung and Michael Luk Chung-hung. The Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions also nominated 12 candidates to contest the 60 available seats in this subsector.
A group of 14 educators has entered the race for the education subsector, urging future chief executive candidates to prioritize addressing teacher shortages and the demographic shifts affecting the sector.
The Election Committee is composed of five sectors encompassing 40 subsectors. Beyond choosing the city leader, the committee will also elect 40 of the 90 members of the Legislative Council in 2029. The nomination period continues until mid-October as the city prepares for this pivotal electoral process.
