A recent survey conducted by Censuswide on behalf of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reveals that over a quarter of individuals feel they lack fundamental personal finance knowledge but are reluctant to seek advice due to embarrassment. The research, which gathered responses from approximately 5,200 participants in February and March, highlights widespread unpreparedness for key financial events.
According to the findings, 56% of respondents acknowledged that they were not adequately prepared for significant financial milestones in their lives. One-third of those surveyed expressed regret over not learning about pensions earlier, and 10% admitted they had never reviewed their state pension forecast.
HMRC underscored the importance of accessible financial information, noting that more than three million people used its mobile application in July. The app provides users with real-time access to critical personal finance data, including tax codes, PAYE details, self-assessment records, child benefits, and state pension forecasts. It also offers guidance on budgeting and saving to help users better manage their finances.
The survey sheds light on gaps in financial literacy and signals the need for improved education and resources to support individuals in making informed financial decisions.
