Morecambe Football Club has secured the signing of winger Elliot Newby as part of a broader effort to rebuild following consecutive relegations. Manager Adam Lakeland views Newby’s arrival as a key indicator of the club’s ambitions to strengthen the squad and return to competitive form.
The 30-year-old Newby brings extensive experience from both the English Football League (EFL) and the National League, having most recently played for Barrow in League Two. His career highlights include winning promotion from the National League North with Chorley and securing a National League title with Stockport County. Newby has also spent time on loan at FC Halifax Town and Altrincham before returning to Barrow for three seasons, where he made over 100 EFL appearances.
Lakeland, who appointed Lewis Leigh earlier this week on a two-year contract, emphasized Newby’s quality and versatility as assets ahead of the upcoming season. “Having played the past couple of seasons in the EFL, we are adding yet more quality to our group, a player who is proven above the level we are going to be playing at next season,” Lakeland said. “Elliot has achieved promotion out of this league previously, bringing a wealth of experience with him. I like how direct he is, how aggressive he likes to be with the ball at his feet, the way he carries the ball, and with two good feet, he will hopefully provide another source of goals for us in the form of both assists and goals.”
Newby expressed enthusiasm about joining Morecambe, citing the club’s vision and Lakeland’s leadership as decisive factors. “It’s happened quite fast really, but I’m buzzing to be here and can’t wait to get going,” Newby commented. “I met with Adam in the off-season and had a really good conversation with him. You could see his ambition for the club straight away and speaking about how I would fit into that really excited me. By bringing Adam in and with the signings the club have made, you can tell they really want to push on and turn over a new leaf.”
The signing of Newby, combined with other recent acquisitions, signals Morecambe’s commitment to reversing their recent fortunes and mounting a challenge to return to higher tiers of English football.
