Morecambe secured a 3-1 victory over Merthyr Town in a closely contested league match on Saturday, propelled by two late goals that decisively shifted the momentum in their favor. The game, played under challenging conditions, saw Taelor O’Kane make a significant impact on his first league start by scoring the go-ahead goal.
Morecambe opened the scoring eight minutes before half-time when Paul Lewis found the net with a shot that slipped through Merthyr goalkeeper Jaimie Cogman’s legs from a tight angle. Despite a slow start with limited clear chances, the match grew more competitive in the second half. Merthyr responded through Cole Jarvis, who headed in a free-kick just before the hour to equalize and temporarily lift the home side’s spirits.
Merthyr pressed forward after the leveller, with Sam Pearson coming close to putting his team ahead on more than one occasion, including a clearance off the crossbar. However, Morecambe regained the lead when O’Kane capitalized on a half-cleared free-kick, firing a low shot into the bottom corner 17 minutes from time.
The visitors sealed the win in stoppage time as Isaac Buckley-Ricketts converted a chance to extend Morecambe’s advantage. Although Merthyr had opportunities, including Japhet Matondo delivering a cross that Morgan Wigley failed to convert, and Matondo’s own shot missing the target, they were unable to respond further.
This result allowed Morecambe to leapfrog Merthyr Town in the league standings, highlighting their resilience and ability to capitalize late in the match.
