Morgan Park secured a 24-14 victory over Kenwood in the city championship football game held Saturday at Lane Stadium in Chicago. The Mustangs completed a comeback fueled by a late surge led by senior wide receiver Travezz Jones and junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr.
Jones, who finished with five catches for a team-high 76 yards, caught a crucial 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter that erased Kenwood’s 14-8 lead. He also successfully converted the two-point attempt that gave Morgan Park the advantage. “The ball was there, and I knew I had to help out my team and get us going because we were playing kind of flat,” Jones said. “That brought us all of the energy that we needed.”
Smith, a junior, completed 14 of 21 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, including the strike to Jones that shifted momentum in the second half. “We have an unbreakable bond, and I always know to look for him,” Smith said. “We also know when something great is about to happen.”
Junior wide receiver Jaxon Bland also contributed with a touchdown reception and a two-point conversion, helping Morgan Park (8-1) build on its early comeback. The Mustangs had previously secured the Public League Red Star title.
Kenwood’s offense was led by junior quarterback Malachi Henigan, who threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Lawrence Carr and also ran for a four-yard touchdown. The Broncos (6-3) entered the contest as Public League Red Shield champions and held a 14-8 halftime lead before Morgan Park rallied in the second half.
Morgan Park coach Chris James highlighted Jones’ growth as a player and his ability to come through in pivotal moments. “I’ve had him all four years, and he’s just really come of age and become so much more mature,” James said. “When we needed him the most, he really stepped up and made plays. He’s always ready to make plays.”
Jones credited his speed and physical style for creating difficulties for the Kenwood defense, despite attempts by opponents to disrupt his rhythm. His 23-yard reception on a critical third-and-long situation late in the game set up Bland’s touchdown that ultimately sealed the victory.
With this win, Morgan Park claimed the city championship, adding to an impressive season following their earlier Public League success.
