Morocco’s national team is setting its sights on World Cup glory ahead of their crucial Group C match against Scotland in Boston on Tuesday. The Atlas Lions, who earned a draw in their opening fixture against Brazil, are determined to secure a win that would propel them into the knockout stages.
Crystal Palace defender Chadi Riad, a key figure in Morocco’s defense, expressed confidence that the team can contend for the title. “Our objective is to win the World Cup. There is no other goal,” Riad said. Morocco currently ranks as the sixth-best team globally according to the latest FIFA rankings. The team reached the semi-finals in the 2022 tournament, finishing fourth, and they come into the event as reigning Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions.
Morocco’s campaign began with a 1-1 draw against a strong Brazilian side, with Ismael Saibari opening the scoring before Brazil’s Vinicius Jr equalized. Scotland, meanwhile, sit atop Group C after John McGinn’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Haiti on the opening matchday. The Scots will enjoy substantial support from their well-traveled supporters, known as the Tartan Army, who are expected to fill the stands in Boston. However, Riad emphasized that Morocco’s fans remain passionately behind the team. “Our fans are always with us, no matter what happens,” he said. “We are very thankful to them for that support.”
Morocco winger Chemsdine Talbi, who featured as a substitute in the opening game, stated that the squad’s performance against Brazil proved they have the quality and confidence to challenge any opponent, including Scotland. “We have a very good team. We didn’t need to fear Brazil and we don’t fear any other team,” he noted. Talbi believes the team can build on their initial outing, describing it as a valuable experience despite narrowly missing out on a victory. “We’re here to go as far as possible in this World Cup. I think we showed that in the first game, absolutely. But it’s not the end yet. We can still improve,” he said.
Talbi also praised the impact of teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who marked his World Cup debut with a strong performance against Brazil. “He’s a great player. He has come into the squad to help us and we’re really happy to have him on the team,” Talbi added.
As Morocco prepares to face Scotland in Boston, both teams are vying for their first win in the group, with Morocco aiming to build on their promising start and Scotland looking to maintain their early momentum.
