Russia conducted a significant missile strike on Kyiv overnight, deploying cluster munitions in an attack that coincided with ongoing diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks involving the United States and Ukraine. The assault involved more than 20 missiles and resulted in two fatalities and over 30 injuries, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that three ballistic missiles launched at the capital were equipped with cluster warheads, which disperse numerous smaller explosives designed to inflict widespread damage. One of the missiles detonated in Kyiv’s historic Pechersk district, damaging several local businesses, restaurants, and monastery buildings. Zelenskyy asserted that the use of such weapons in civilian-populated areas was deliberate, emphasizing the intent to maximize harm to non-combatants.
The attack caused damage across six districts of Kyiv, including a heavily struck shopping center in the Obolonskiy district. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andriy Sybiha, described the overnight bombardment as a stark illustration of Russia’s approach to the conflict, rejecting diplomatic pressure and emphasizing that only strength would halt the war.
The strike came hours after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and a U.S. envoy in St. Petersburg aimed at resuming stalled peace negotiations. Despite the talks, which included discussions on potentially reviving trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, no firm agreements have been announced. Zelenskyy noted that Ukrainian intelligence had anticipated an intensification of Russian air attacks in the near future, suggesting Moscow might be exploiting the current slowdown in diplomatic progress and the prospect of an upcoming summit involving China, Russia, and the U.S. in Shenzhen.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that Abu Dhabi is under consideration as a venue for the proposed trilateral meeting but stated no final decision had been made regarding Russian representation at the talks.
In parallel, Russian officials reported that Ukrainian drone strikes overnight had injured three people near Moscow. The attacks led to temporary suspension of operations at several airports in the Russian capital and reportedly caused damage to a military facility. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the drone incursions as the third-largest this year in terms of the number of devices launched toward the city.
The current round of diplomacy has yet to yield substantive breakthroughs, with Ukraine advocating for an energy ceasefire to prevent further Russian assaults on critical power infrastructure ahead of winter. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to halt its own attacks against Russian refineries and oil terminals.
As tensions remain high, the continuation of missile attacks coupled with ongoing but inconclusive diplomatic efforts underscore the fragile and volatile nature of the current conflict.
