According to local accounts, mosquitoes that were once relatively benign have evolved, with species such as the colloquially named “ankle-biters” becoming active during daylight hours, especially around dawn and dusk. In contrast, mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as West Nile virus and malaria typically feed at night. Ecologist Karthikeyan Chandrasegaran of the University of California, Irvine, explains that these insects have adapted sophisticated behaviors to evade swatting attempts, altering their flight patterns to avoid repeat strikes.

Some scientific assessments suggest that eliminating mosquitoes could save millions of human lives without causing major ecological disruptions, as predators would shift their diets accordingly.
