The Ministry of Transport (MoT) held the inaugural workshop for the Qatar Public Transport Master Plan (QPTMP), marking a significant step in establishing a sustainable and integrated public transportation system across the country. The event, themed “Project Overview & Existing Conditions Insights,” took place recently and brought together MoT officials, including Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs Abdullah Saif Al Sulaiti, alongside representatives from relevant entities and stakeholders.

The QPTMP is a key strategic initiative aligned with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Ministry of Transport Strategy 2025–2030. It focuses on expanding multimodal travel options, enhancing accessibility, and reducing reliance on private vehicles to alleviate traffic congestion. The plan seeks to create a future-ready transit framework that can adapt to rapid urbanization, population growth, and evolving economic activity while ensuring safe, reliable, and accessible services.

Ali Al Darwish, Director of the Public Transport Affairs Department, highlighted the plan’s dual role in formulating strategic directions and providing practical tools to assist policymakers in prioritizing transportation investments and projects. He emphasized that the success of the QPTMP depends on coordinated efforts among diverse stakeholders, a principle reflected in the participatory nature of the workshop and the MoT’s commitment to evidence-based planning.

The initial phase of the QPTMP has involved a comprehensive review of existing policies, strategies, and relevant studies, supplemented by data collection, fieldwork, and surveys to assess the current state of public transport in Qatar. These efforts have helped identify key challenges and opportunities that will inform the plan’s development moving forward.

Officials expect the outcomes and recommendations generated from the workshop to strengthen the plan’s implementation framework, supporting the ongoing transformation of Qatar’s transportation sector. The QPTMP underscores the country’s dedication to advancing sustainable mobility solutions, aiming to improve quality of life, enhance regional connectivity, promote environmental sustainability, and position Qatar as a leader in public transport planning within the region.
