A couple holidaying in a luxury villa in Spain tragically died after becoming entrapped in a hot tub last week, authorities have confirmed. Thomasina Tobin, 51, from County Monaghan, Ireland, and her husband Patrick Tobin, 48, originally from New Zealand, were found by their two teenage sons, aged 14 and 16, who alerted neighbours and police. The boys are believed to have special needs and had searched the villa before discovering their parents outside the hot tub.
Investigators have determined that the deaths resulted from suction entrapment, a rare but serious hazard linked to strong vacuum forces generated by hot tub drains or swimming pool filtration systems. Her father, Tommy McArdle, was notable as a former director of Irish broadcaster RTÉ and a goalkeeper for the Monaghan senior county football team in the mid-20th century.
