A 70-year-old woman has been sentenced to four years in prison for a pattern of abusive behavior toward her adult daughter, a court in London has heard. Elena Pronina, originally from Russia and residing in Westminster, was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH), strangulation, and coercive and controlling conduct.
The offenses, which took place over nearly a decade from 2016 to 2025, involved frequent violent episodes. According to evidence presented at Southwark Crown Court, Pronina physically assaulted her daughter, Marina, on a near-daily basis. One incident described during the trial involved Pronina dragging Marina by her hair to the bathroom and beating her after the daughter objected to her mother’s snoring.
The court also heard that Pronina obstructed Marina’s personal freedoms, including preventing her from living with her husband and forcing her to share a room. On one occasion, she reportedly threw away a birthday cake to stop Marina from celebrating her birthday. Additional evidence detailed further assaults, such as attacks over minor disputes, including one related to Marina’s care of flowers while on holiday.
The jury at Southwark Crown Court ultimately found Pronina guilty on multiple counts, reflecting a sustained pattern of coercive control and physical violence within their household. The sentencing marks a judicial effort to address and penalize long-term domestic abuse, particularly where it involves adult victims subject to ongoing intimidation and harm within family settings.
Pronina’s defense and any statements from the accused were not detailed in court reports. The case underscores issues of elder-on-adult abuse and the challenges of identifying and prosecuting such cases where familial relationships complicate intervention.
