A 24-year-old woman giving birth by caesarean section at Bulovka Hospital in Prague suffered burns during the procedure, hospital officials confirmed. The incident occurred on August 25 and involved a fire reportedly caused by a disinfectant used during surgery. The hospital said the newborn was unharmed.

According to a hospital spokeswoman, Eva Stojeda Libigerova, the caesarean was performed due to acute obstetrical complications. While details of the incident remain under investigation, she confirmed the mother’s condition is stable, does not require intensive care, and that she is now recuperating in a standard ward alongside her child.

Local media reported the burns affected the woman’s genitals, thighs, sides, and lower abdomen. The fire is believed to have ignited when disinfectant applied during the surgery caught alight, coinciding with the use of a surgical instrument to control bleeding. Following the incident, the mother was transferred briefly to another Prague hospital equipped with a specialized burn unit for further treatment before returning to Bulovka.

Bulovka Hospital has faced scrutiny in recent years, including a 2024 incident in which it performed an abortion on the wrong patient after confusing two women. The hospital issued an apology and compensated the affected woman, with authorities subsequently closing the case.

At present, the hospital continues to investigate the rare occurrence of the fire during surgery and has not released additional information on the matter.
