Motorcyclists have highlighted the dangers of towing another motorcycle on the road, particularly when attempting to do so by using one foot to maintain balance. Riders are urging their peers to keep their bikes well maintained to avoid such risky situations.

Speaking from Petaling Jaya, motorcyclist Shahrir Kifli, 34, emphasized that towing on highways is especially hazardous for both parties involved. He recommended that riders consider insurance policies that include towing coverage, allowing them to safely summon professional tow trucks when their motorcycles break down. “Sometimes a motorcycle breaks down on the highway, and even stopping at the road shoulder can be dangerous, especially if there is heavy traffic,” Shahrir noted.

Delivery rider Alif Daniel, 20, shared his experience helping a fellow motorcyclist by towing them when they were in need and encouraged riders to offer assistance such as fixing minor issues or providing petrol to avoid towing altogether. “If you can help fix the bike or get petrol please do because then you can avoid the ‘towing,’” he said.

However, logistics operator S. Mathan, 23, pointed out the significant risks involved in towing another motorcycle, particularly on highways where vehicles can travel at speeds of about 100 kilometers per hour. He warned that such practices pose a danger given the speed and proximity of other vehicles, increasing the chance of accidents. Mathan advised that it is safer to call for a lorry, pickup truck, or a professional towing service to transport the motorcycle rather than attempting a manual tow.

These insights from various motorcyclists underscore the consensus that maintaining motorcycles properly and utilizing appropriate towing services when necessary can reduce the risks associated with roadside breakdowns, especially on busy highways.
