Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has identified Newcastle United as a potentially suitable next destination for midfielder Mason Mount, amid uncertainty over the England international’s role at Old Trafford this season.

Mount moved to Manchester United in the summer of 2023 after leaving Chelsea but has faced challenges establishing himself as a regular starter. The 27-year-old made 23 Premier League appearances last season under interim manager Michael Carrick, though injuries sidelined him for nine matches. His fitness issues have been a concern since joining United, contrasting with a previously strong injury record at Chelsea.

Despite showing glimpses of his ability when fit, Meulensteen suggests Mount is unlikely to be a key figure for United this campaign. “If Mount stays, he would only be a bit-part player,” Meulensteen said in an interview with Andy’s Bet Club. He highlighted competition for attacking midfield roles, mentioning Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as players likely to start ahead of Mount, though the latter two primarily play for other clubs, adding some complexity to the assessment.

Meulensteen noted that Mount, entering the prime years of his career, would likely seek regular playing time. He said a move could benefit the player, while leaving a gap on United’s left side that the club would need to address with a suitable backup.

Newcastle United have shown interest in acquiring midfield reinforcements this summer. The club recently missed out on signing Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, suggesting they remain active in the transfer market. However, Mount’s reported salary demands and age, combined with Newcastle’s recent recruitment profile, may complicate such a move.

Mount is under contract with Manchester United for two more seasons, with an option for a third. Whether the club intends to keep the midfielder or sanction a transfer remains to be seen as the new Premier League campaign approaches.
