Hundreds of mourners gathered in central Kyiv on Tuesday to pay tribute to Vitalina Yarovenko, a 20-year-old university student who was killed during a Russian strike over the weekend. Yarovenko had been aiding those wounded in an earlier attack when she lost her life.

The funeral service began at St. Michael’s golden-domed Cathedral, where clergy conducted prayers over Yarovenko’s open casket. Family members and friends came forward to say their final goodbyes. In a poignant request, Yarovenko’s family asked attendees to wear white or traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts instead of black, hoping to honor her memory without sorrow.

Although Yarovenko was a civilian, her mother requested that the funeral procession be carried out with the honors typically reserved for fallen soldiers in Ukraine. Following the service, several hundred people accompanied the casket as it was carried downhill toward Independence Square.

The procession caused a temporary halt in traffic, during which drivers left their vehicles to stand silently in respect. The outpouring of mourners and the solemn atmosphere reflected the broader impact of ongoing violence in the region and the personal losses endured by communities caught in the conflict.
