Hundreds gathered on Sunday at St. Theresa of Avila Church in West Roxbury to attend the wake of Boston firefighter Robert T. Kilduff Jr., who died in the line of duty on May 23. Kilduff, 53, was a third-generation firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, all of whom served with Rescue 2 in Roxbury.
Kilduff’s death occurred while he was responding to a three-alarm fire at a residence in Dorchester. He fell from the third floor of the home during firefighting operations. A Marine Corps veteran, Kilduff had served with the Boston Fire Department for 24 years.
The community’s outpouring of respect extended beyond Boston, with hundreds of firefighters from across the United States and Canada expected to attend his funeral Mass. The service will take place Monday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End.
Kilduff is remembered not only for his dedication to firefighting but also for his longstanding service to the city and his family’s legacy within the department.
