A Dhaka court has denied bail for the third time to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the lawmaker representing Satkhira-4, in a case concerning the alleged abetment of his second wife, Mariam Khatun’s suicide. The decision was made on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir after a hearing that included arguments from both the defense and prosecution.
State counsel Shamsud Doha Sumon confirmed the court’s rejection of the bail application. Defense attorneys Mahbubur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman argued in favor of their client, maintaining that Gazi Nazrul was not involved in the incident outlined in the first information report (FIR). The defense further contended that the charges against him were motivated by attempts to harass him.
The prosecution opposed the bail request, prompting the court to review the evidence and arguments before reaching its decision. This marks the third occasion on which the court has refused to grant bail to the lawmaker in connection with the case. The legal proceedings continue amid significant public and political attention.
