The iconic character Mr Bean has been named guest editor of the longstanding children’s comic Beano, launching a special crossover that merges his world with that of Dennis the Menace and The Bash Street Kids. The partnership marks a notable event for the publication, which is being temporarily renamed Mr Beano for the first time since its inception 88 years ago.

The initiative, which began with the release of the first issue on September 16, 2026, will run for four issues. Rowan Atkinson, the actor behind Mr Bean, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, recalling his own childhood fondness for the comic. “I grew up reading Beano and always adored its anarchic style and tone,” Atkinson said. He also noted surprise that such a creative crossover had not happened sooner.

Mike Stirling, director of Beano, acknowledged the risky but humorous nature of the editorial change. “Giving Mr Bean the editor’s pencil was probably a terrible idea — but a very funny one,” Stirling remarked, highlighting the playful spirit behind the project.

This crossover is part of Beano’s broader celebration titled the Year of Mischief, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Dennis the Menace’s debut in 1951. The special issues aim to engage a new generation of readers while honouring the comic’s legacy of lighthearted chaos and distinctive British humour.
