The character Mr Bean, created and portrayed by comedian Rowan Atkinson, will take on a special role as guest editor of The Beano comic in a four-issue collaboration set to begin this week. Known for his clumsy and mischievous antics, Mr Bean will join iconic Beano characters such as Dennis the Menace, the Bash Street Kids, and Minnie the Minx in a crossover that celebrates the comic’s longstanding spirit of playful chaos.

In the first issue, The Beano will be temporarily rebranded as "Mr Beano," reflecting Mr Bean’s whimsical editorial influence. Among his changes is the promotion of his signature brown knitted bear, Teddy, to the role of “Teditor.” Subsequent installments in the series will follow Mr Bean as he inadvertently starts working at Bash Street School, where he introduces his own unique approach to the classroom rules. The storyline will also feature interactions between Mr Bean’s cat Scrapper and the comic’s Beano hounds, Gnasher and Gnipper, promising further comedic mishaps.

Rowan Atkinson expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting his long-standing connection to The Beano. “I grew up reading Beano and always adored its anarchic style and tone,” he said, also describing Mr Bean as “a natural-born anarchist and a child at heart.” He added that it was surprising the connection between Mr Bean and The Beano hadn’t been explored sooner.

Mike Stirling, the Beano’s Director of Mischief, highlighted Mr Bean’s popularity among younger readers, mentioning that children voted Atkinson as one of their top three mischief makers earlier this year. “Mr Bean was always going to fit right in,” he said, acknowledging that granting Mr Bean the editorial pencil might prove “a terrible idea, but a funny one.”

This crossover is part of The Beano’s ongoing Year of Mischief celebrations, which mark the 75th anniversary of Dennis the Menace. First published in 1938, The Beano remains produced at its original headquarters in Dundee and continues to be printed in the United Kingdom.

The initial issue of the Mr Bean guest-edited series will be available from tomorrow at supermarkets, newsagents, and online.
