Rowan Atkinson’s iconic character Mr Bean is set to take over the Beano comic in a special four-part collaboration beginning tomorrow. As guest editor, Mr Bean will temporarily rename the long-running publication to "Mr Beano," bringing his trademark brand of chaos and humor to the pages.
The takeover will feature Mr Bean promoting his Teddy bear to the role of “Teditor” and embarking on a series of misadventures, including taking a job at Bash Street School and interacting—sometimes contentiously—with well-known Beano characters such as Dennis the Menace and Minnie the Minx. The run of issues will continue until October 7.
Atkinson, 71, expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting his longstanding affection for the comic. He described Mr Bean as “a natural born anarchist and a child at heart,” and said he was surprised it had taken so long to develop this creative partnership. The collaboration coincides with the release of new episodes of "Mr Bean: The Animated Series," set to premiere on Boomerang and ITVX.
Mike Stirling, director at Beano, emphasized the alignment between the character and the comic’s tone, highlighting that children voted Atkinson among their top three mischief makers earlier this year. He added that Mr Bean’s inclusion in Beanotown naturally complements the brand’s playful and anarchic spirit. The event is part of Beano’s ongoing "Year of Mischief" campaign designed to celebrate and promote its mischievous characters.
The first special issue featuring Mr Bean is available both in stores and online starting tomorrow.
