Michael Wynn-Jones, widely known for his long-standing association with Norwich City Football Club, has died at home, concluding nearly three decades of involvement with the club. Wynn-Jones and his wife, television chef Delia Smith, were majority shareholders at Norwich City FC for 28 years until their departure in October 2024.
During his tenure, Wynn-Jones attended every Norwich City match, both home and away, choosing to sit among the fans rather than in the directors’ box. He held the title of honorary life president, and the club expressed deep sorrow following his passing.
Together, Wynn-Jones and Smith played a significant role in elevating Norwich City to the Premier League on multiple occasions. Throughout their stewardship, they helped establish a stable financial foundation for the club. While Smith maintained a more public presence, Wynn-Jones was regarded as a trusted adviser and influential figure within the club’s boardroom.
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, Wynn-Jones was raised in Norfolk, where his mother taught at Diss Grammar School and his father served as a Church of England vicar. His connection with Norwich City began at the age of 13. He was educated at Lancing College and the University of Oxford before marrying Delia Smith in 1971 in Stowmarket, Suffolk.
Wynn-Jones had a varied career as a journalist, contributing to publications including the Daily Mirror—where he served as deputy editor of the midweek magazine—and The Spectator. He was also an author of several books, such as The Cartoon History Of Britain, George Cruikshank: His Life And London, and 100 Years On The Road: A Social History Of The Car.
In addition to writing, he founded New Crane Publishing, which produced some of Smith’s cookbooks as well as Sainsbury’s magazine, where he served as editor. The company was sold to Seven Publishing in 2005 for approximately £7 million.
Smith has previously shared that Wynn-Jones often managed cooking at home, allowing her to step away from domestic duties. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years and their nephew, Tom Smith.
