Malaysia’s Universiti Malaya (UM) and China’s Tsinghua University have announced plans to establish a joint artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory at UM’s campus in Kuala Lumpur. The collaboration between the highest-ranked universities from both countries aims to enhance technological innovation, foster research excellence, and strengthen academic ties.

The new AI lab will serve as a shared platform for researchers and experts from UM and Tsinghua to develop advanced AI technologies, cultivate high-level research talent, and address complex societal and global challenges through innovative solutions. UM’s vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, emphasized the lab’s role in positioning leading Asian universities as key players in technological leadership and global knowledge creation. He noted that the initiative is intended not only to benefit Malaysia and China but also to contribute broadly to humanity’s future.

The establishment of the laboratory is part of three major efforts aimed at deepening Malaysia-China cooperation in knowledge creation, cutting-edge research, talent development, and cultural exchange. This partnership follows a visit to UM on October 2 by Prof Qiu Yong, Communist Party of China’s Tsinghua University Committee secretary. Prof Qiu had previously awarded UM alumnus and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim an Honorary Professorship from Tsinghua University in November 2024.

In addition to the AI laboratory, the two institutions plan to hold an annual academic symposium alternating between Malaysia and China. The first of these symposia will be hosted by UM next year and is expected to bring together scholars, researchers, and academic leaders to exchange ideas, explore research opportunities, and foster multidisciplinary collaborations.

The collaboration extends beyond the technology sector and includes joint initiatives encompassing contemporary art, cultural heritage, academic exchanges, exhibitions, and design projects. Prof Noor Azuan highlighted that this partnership reflects a broader vision for Asia’s universities to assume a more influential role in driving the future of science, innovation, and global progress.

He added that Asia’s future should be defined not solely by its economic growth but also by its intellectual leadership, scientific advancements, and contributions to global civilization. Through this cooperation, UM and Tsinghua aim to demonstrate the capacity of Asian universities to shape the next significant phase of global knowledge and innovation.
