A new eight-hour drama series titled *The Greatest* is set to debut on Prime Video, aiming to introduce the story of boxing legend Muhammad Ali to a contemporary audience. The project, produced by Michael B. Jordan, covers Ali’s early life and ascent in the sport, culminating with his victory over Sonny Liston in 1964.

Lonnie Ali, Muhammad Ali’s fourth and final wife, endorsed the series as a way to connect younger generations to the late athlete’s legacy. Now 86, she emphasized that the show serves as a bridge for those less inclined to read extensively about historical figures. “People don’t read as much as they used to,” she said, adding that the series offers a fresh perspective on Ali’s journey.

The role of young Ali, born Cassius Clay, is played by newcomer Jaalen Best. Lonnie Ali praised his portrayal, noting a strong physical resemblance and his ability to embody the boxer’s essence. Their relationship traces back to the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, where she and Best first met. To validate her impression, she consulted John Ramsey, a podcast host specializing in Ali’s life, who also affirmed Best’s suitability for the role. Additionally, Ali’s daughter Hana was shown Best’s portrayal via FaceTime and reportedly responded with surprise at how closely he resembled a family member.

This series marks a shift from the 2001 biopic *Ali*, in which Will Smith portrayed the boxer after being personally chosen by Muhammad Ali and Lonnie Ali. Unlike the previous production, Lonnie had final approval over casting this time.

Ben Watkins, the series creator, emphasized an intention to focus on lesser-known elements of Ali’s early life, drawing inspiration from the approach taken by *The Crown* in presenting a fresh narrative about well-documented historical figures. Producer Matthew Gross described the series as both a character study and a family story, tracing how Cassius Clay evolved into Muhammad Ali.

Gross, affiliated with Authentic Brands—which manages image rights for prominent figures including Ali, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley—highlighted Ali’s enduring cultural significance. He described Ali as “one of the most beloved men to ever walk the earth,” noting his roles as an activist, humanitarian, and athlete. Gross stressed the importance of maintaining Ali’s presence in contemporary conversations, ensuring his relevance to new audiences today.

The series promises to deepen understanding of Ali’s formative years and the personal and social forces that shaped his iconic career and legacy.
