Amy Hawksworth, a 41-year-old mother of two from Wibsey, Bradford, has undergone a dramatic transformation after losing 10 stone, but continues to face challenges with body confidence due to excess skin resulting from her weight loss.

Amy’s struggle with her weight began after the birth of her first child, Poppy, in 2006. Despite previously leading a healthy lifestyle and regularly attending the gym, Amy found herself consuming large amounts of sweet treats while on maternity leave. She attributed her weight gain to symptoms associated with the “baby blues,” a condition she said she only recognized after the birth of her second child. Pregnant, Amy gained six stone, but after delivery her weight continued to climb as she developed a harmful relationship with food.

Six months following the birth of Poppy, Amy experienced a miscarriage that deepened her emotional distress. She described turning to food as a coping mechanism, often indulging in large portions without informing her then-husband. Amy also frequented a local fish and chip shop, consuming secretive meals that contributed to an escalating cycle of binge eating. At her heaviest, Amy weighed 21 stone 7 pounds.

The turning point came after seeing a photograph of herself with Poppy, which left her feeling “ashamed, disgusted and embarrassed.” Motivated to regain control over her health, Amy joined a Weight Watchers group and adopted a calorie-restricted diet alongside regular exercise. Over the next 18 months, she lost six stone. She maintained a disciplined approach during her second pregnancy in 2009, exercising and eating healthily to avoid repeating previous patterns.

Following her son Harry’s birth and a separation from her husband, Amy lost an additional four stone, bringing her weight down to 11 stone. However, the substantial weight reduction resulted in loose, sagging skin around her abdomen, which became a source of distress. She recounted an incident at a pub where a man called her “saggy t*ts,” a comment that deeply upset her and eroded her confidence.

Dating has posed further challenges for Amy as she navigates reactions to her changed body. She said she often informs potential partners in advance about the excess skin, but not all responses have been supportive. On one occasion, a date told her that the idea she had been bigger made him “feel sick,” prompting Amy to end the encounter immediately.

Amy’s experience highlights the complex emotional and physical consequences that can accompany significant weight loss. While she has achieved her goal of transforming her figure and improving her health, the lasting effects on her body and self-esteem remain significant obstacles.
