Shanice Brookes, a 30-year-old mother and child and youth worker, was fatally shot in a suspected gang-related incident in Sheffield in the early hours of Monday. The shooting occurred around 2:45 a.m. outside the One Four One bar on West Street, located in the city center, where Brookes had been out socializing with friends.
South Yorkshire Police described Brookes as an “innocent bystander” who was not the intended target but was believed to be sitting near those involved in the shooting. She was taken to the hospital following the incident but later died from her injuries. Authorities have characterized the killing as “senseless.”
Brookes’s family paid tribute to her, describing her as a kind-hearted and dedicated mother who was deeply loved by her son. They highlighted her ambition and determination, noting that she was due to complete a degree in photography, videography, and graphic design shortly. Colleagues and family remembered her for her infectious laugh, warm personality, and strong spirit.
Following the shooting, three people—two men aged 30 and a 32-year-old woman—were arrested and questioned by police. One of those arrested has since been released. Investigations into the circumstances leading up to the shooting are ongoing as police work to establish a full picture of the event.
The incident has drawn attention to the impact of gun violence on innocent individuals and the community, with officials emphasizing the need for justice and further preventive measures. Authorities continue to appeal for information from the public to aid their inquiries.
