Raised in Farnham, Surrey, by his mother Yvonne after the man he believed to be his father, William Anderson, left the family, Rodney had long sought to confirm William’s identity and whereabouts. He recalled that his mother and grandmother remained silent about his paternity, with Yvonne blaming William for abandoning them. Efforts to trace William, including a DNA test a decade ago that disproved a suspected familial link to a woman believed to be his half-sister, left Rodney without answers.

The breakthrough came this spring when Rodney’s daughter, Dawn, was contacted via the genealogy website Ancestry by a Canadian woman named Bethany. Bethany suggested Rodney’s father might be her half-uncle. Initial skepticism gave way to confirmation when Bethany shared divorce papers from her grandfather, Charles Blakney, a Canadian soldier stationed in Britain after the D-Day landings. The documents included a letter from Yvonne to her grandfather, in which she acknowledged giving birth to Charles’s child and reminded him of a promise to marry her.
