A Mumbai woman confronted senior cabinet minister Girish Mahajan on Tuesday over a severe traffic jam caused by a political rally in the Worli area, drawing widespread attention and sparking debate about VIP privileges and public inconvenience. The incident occurred during a BJP women’s wing rally protesting parliamentary opposition to the Women's Reservation Bill.
The rally, held near the NSCI Dome on Annie Besant Road, involved thousands of party workers transported in multiple vehicles, alongside attendance by several VIPs. The large gathering and inadequate traffic management led to significant congestion on one of Mumbai's key arterial roads at peak hours, impacting daily commuters.
In a viral video, the woman—identified as Ms. Grewal from her Mercedes car registration—was seen approaching Mahajan and a group of party workers and police officers, visibly angry after being stuck for over an hour. Wearing yellow shorts and a cap, she loudly demanded the minister to “get out,” explaining she was on her way to pick up her child from school and could not afford the delay.
Support for Ms. Grewal quickly emerged from activists and members of the public, who viewed her actions as emblematic of broader frustration with what they described as "VIP culture" and the negligence of officials toward ordinary citizens’ daily hardships. Civic activist Dr. Gaurang Vora praised the woman’s courage, asserting that politicians must be held accountable for misbehavior that disrupts public life.
The rally had progressed from Jamboree Maidan to the NSCI Dome along Annie Besant Road on a working day, a time when many parents, like Ms. Grewal, were attending to school routines. This exacerbated the effects of the traffic backlog, fueling public irritation.
In response, Minister Girish Mahajan issued an apology for the traffic inconvenience but criticized the language and tone used by the woman during the confrontation, deeming it inappropriate. Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde expressed regret over the disruption but underscored that the protest itself aimed to raise awareness on women’s rights, highlighting the importance of the cause despite the temporary disturbances.
The episode has reignited discussions about the balance between political expression and citizens’ daily needs in a city long plagued by traffic woes, with many calling for improved coordination to prevent similar incidents in the future.
