In Gaza City, local artists have completed a mural depicting American rapper Macklemore wrapped in a Palestinian flag, raising his fist in solidarity. The artwork, painted on a large concrete slab amid the city's ruins, serves as a tribute to the rapper following his removal from Ed Sheeran’s upcoming tour after publicly advocating for a “Free Palestine.”
The mural carries the message, “Thank you for using your voice for Palestine,” and was created by artists Anne Redwan, 26, and Qusai al-Helo. Redwan described the piece as a simple gesture of gratitude and emphasized the desire of Gaza’s artists to express their experiences amid the ongoing siege. “We can paint murals bigger than this to express our feelings,” she said.
Macklemore has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian causes and was dropped from Sheeran’s tour after commenting on stage about Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The tour’s organizers reportedly faced pressure following complaints from stadium owners, including U.S. billionaire Robert Kraft, who owns Gillette Stadium, the venue for the New England Patriots football team. Kraft stated he barred Macklemore from performing at the stadium over allegations of anti-Semitism, which the rapper has denied.
The controversy surrounding the tour has sparked increased attention and financial commitments to aid organizations working in Gaza. Macklemore announced plans to donate his net earnings of approximately US$1 million from the tour to six humanitarian groups providing support in the region. Aid officials welcomed the celebrity spotlight but stressed the importance of sustained funding. Toby Fricker, a local UNICEF official, cautioned that continuous contributions are vital for meeting Gaza’s ongoing needs for food, water, medical care, and shelter.
Hussein Murtaja, head of a Gaza-based humanitarian organization offering mental health services, expressed that Macklemore’s public support carries significant weight beyond financial assistance. “When artists of this stature, with this many followers or fans, all come to know more about the cause, and support reaching a political solution, support achieving peace for the people of Gaza ... That means a great deal to us,” he said.
