Author-journalist Sheila Yasmin Marikar has released a new novel, Incidentals, which explores the complexities of a troubled marriage set against the backdrop of a luxury holiday in the Maldives. The book centers on a couple who travel to the island nation to celebrate their anniversary, only to confront the fragile state of their relationship amid the picturesque yet unsettling setting.

Marikar’s inspiration for the novel originated from a personal experience during a media trip that did not go as planned. Initially, she intended to craft a story focusing on a beauty influencer retreat that unravels, but as the narrative developed, it evolved into a more intimate examination of a couple seeking resolution in their personal lives. “The story I needed to tell was something more personal and relatable: a couple essentially looking for a life raft — either they figure it out in the most beautiful place in the world, or they don't, and that's the end,” Marikar explained.

Incidentals is described as a blend of holiday escapism and psychological tension, weaving a tale that juxtaposes the idyllic environment of the Maldives with underlying emotional turmoil. Central to the plot is the discovery of a corpse floating in the turquoise waters, introducing elements of mystery and suspense to the narrative.

The novel, published by Little A, an imprint of Amazon Publishing, offers a fresh take on the luxury travel genre by incorporating themes of interpersonal strife and the darker aspects of human relationships. Marikar’s background as a journalist informs her storytelling approach, lending authenticity and depth to the characters and setting.

While details regarding the timing of the anniversary trip are embedded within the novel’s storyline rather than tied to real-world events, the book taps into contemporary interest in tropical destinations, complicated relationships, and suspenseful fiction. Incidentals presents readers with a story that is simultaneously captivating for its setting and compelling in its exploration of emotional vulnerability and resilience.
