Muscat Municipality has launched an expanded public awareness campaign aimed at promoting compliance with smoking regulations in enclosed public spaces across the city. The campaign, which began this month, stresses the importance of maintaining smoke-free environments for the health and comfort of all residents and visitors.
Central to the initiative is an informational poster bearing the slogan “Clean Air... A Right for Everyone.” The campaign highlights the adverse effects of indoor smoking on not only smokers but also on non-smokers, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions. It encourages the public to avoid smoking inside enclosed facilities, to use designated smoking areas where available, and to follow all posted signage and local regulations.
Local residents have expressed support for the campaign, noting its timely relevance amid increased public attention to the health risks associated with second-hand smoke. Rashid bin Said al Alawi, a frequent patron of shopping malls in Muscat, emphasized the importance of maintaining smoke-free indoor spaces. “Many families spend long hours in malls and other public facilities, so maintaining smoke-free indoor spaces is essential. Campaigns like this encourage people to respect public regulations and be mindful of the wellbeing of others,” he said.
Similarly, Mariam al Maskari, who often visits public parks with her family, described the message as both necessary and practical. She pointed out that simple awareness efforts can significantly improve public behavior. “Everyone deserves to enjoy public places without being exposed to cigarette smoke, especially children and older people. Using designated smoking areas is a practical solution that benefits everyone,” she noted.
Health experts continue to emphasize the dangers posed by exposure to second-hand smoke, linking it to heightened risks of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases among non-smokers. They argue that sustained public education remains a critical tool for encouraging healthier habits and ensuring adherence to regulations designed to protect public health.
Through this campaign and similar initiatives, Muscat Municipality aims to foster a culture of shared responsibility among its population, encouraging cooperation in creating cleaner, healthier, and safer public environments throughout the governorate.
