The main water network in Muscat Governorate is set to receive purified water from the Wadi Dayqah Dam by mid-2027, marking a significant step in Oman's efforts to enhance its water infrastructure and ensure sustainable supply. The project, led by Nama Water Services, involves constructing a water purification plant at Wadi Dayqah Dam, located in the Wilayat of Qurayat, with the goal of improving water security by diversifying sources and increasing system resilience amid population growth and urban expansion.

Currently, the development is 57 percent complete and is expected to be operational by May 2027. Once finished, the plant will have a daily purification capacity of around 65,000 cubic meters, with the purified water stored in a newly built reservoir that can hold up to 20,000 cubic meters adjacent to the dam.

Eng Hassan bin Abdullah al Farsi, General Manager of Projects at Nama Water Services, highlighted that the project is part of an integrated approach to utilize and optimize existing water resources efficiently. He noted that the initiative will create approximately 100 jobs with a focus on employing residents of the Wilayat of Qurayat. The project also aims to strengthen collaborations among water sector institutions, enhancing the sustainability and reliability of Oman's water supply.

The infrastructure includes a 7-kilometer, 900-millimeter diameter pipeline that will transport water from the dam to the purification plant, along with a connected integrated pumping station to facilitate efficient transfer between the dam, treatment facilities, and storage reservoir.

According to Eng Nadia bint Juma al Balushi, Director of Public-Private Partnership Projects at Nama Water Services and Project Manager for the plant, about 35,000 cubic meters of purified water per day will be directed into the drinking water network serving the Wilayat of Qurayat and linked to the larger Muscat Governorate water system. Additionally, approximately 30,000 cubic meters daily will be allocated for agricultural irrigation within the Wilayat of Qurayat.

The project further includes a 20,000 cubic meter collection tank connected to Muscat’s main water transmission network. This tank will provide increased storage capacity, enhance pumping regulation, and improve distribution flexibility to meet varying demand levels. These features are designed to boost operational responsiveness and prepare the water network to accommodate future growth and water needs across the governorate.
