Emmy-nominated New Zealand actress Melanie Lynskey has been cast to portray Erin Patterson in a new limited series titled *Mushroom Murders: There’s More to Unearth*, set to premiere on Paramount+ in 2027. The show will dramatize the events surrounding the 2023 poisoning case in Leongatha, Victoria, where Patterson was convicted of the murders of three relatives.
The series covers the 97-day period following a 2023 lunch during which Patterson allegedly served toxic death cap mushrooms concealed within individual servings of beef wellington to her estranged in-laws. The meal resulted in the deaths of Don and Gail Patterson, her husband’s parents, and his aunt Heather Wilkinson. Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived the poisoning after spending several weeks in hospital. Patterson, 51, was sentenced to life imprisonment in September 2025 for the murders and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson.
Patterson’s conviction and the case itself gained extensive media attention both in Australia and internationally, inspiring numerous podcasts, books, and television projects dedicated to exploring the circumstances and aftermath. The convicted woman’s legal team has appealed the verdict, describing the case as a “catastrophic” miscarriage of justice.
Lynskey, known for her performances in *Two and a Half Men*, *The Last of Us*, and *Yellowjackets*, announced her involvement at the Paramount+ and Ten upfronts event held at the MasterChef Kitchen in the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds. The announcement provoked a notable reaction among attending media and industry stakeholders. Lynskey expressed enthusiasm about the role, describing the project as offering “a compelling and unique perspective” on a story that remains murky despite widespread coverage.
The limited series will consist of six episodes, written by Anya Beyersdorf and directed by Diana Reid, produced by Soapbox Pictures. Beyersdorf, Reid, Lynskey, and Deb Balderstone serve as executive producers. Network 10 president and head of streaming at Paramount+ Australia, Beverley McGarvey, highlighted the series as a “gripping real-life story” that captivated audiences both nationally and globally, promising the production will meet the creative standards and scale expected from the platform.
*Mushroom Murders: There’s More to Unearth* marks the second dramatization of the Patterson poisoning case. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation announced in 2025 a separate project, *Toxic*, developed by Elise McCredie and Tony Ayres, though a release date for that series has yet to be confirmed.
