Maurisio “Mauri” Tapia, the lead singer of the Southern California indie rock band Los Retros, has been charged with four felony counts related to unlawful acts involving a child under the age of 10. The 26-year-old musician from Moorpark was arrested on October 8 and later booked with bail set at $3 million. Charges were formally filed on October 12 in Ventura County Superior Court, where Tapia did not enter a plea. The allegations include special circumstances citing the victim’s vulnerability and Tapia’s alleged abuse of a position of trust. The next scheduled court appearance is set for Thursday.
Los Retros, known for blending vintage Mexican ballads, American oldies, and modern indie rock, has gained considerable popularity in the Latino music scene. The band performed at this year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, and their singles such as “Someone to Spend Time With” and “Amtrak” have attracted millions of streams and monthly listeners. They have been closely associated with Stones Throw Records, which initially planned for Los Retros to co-headline the label’s 30th anniversary festival.
Following the emergence of the allegations, Stones Throw Records announced the cancellation of Tapia’s performance at the anniversary event prior to being fully informed of the situation. In a statement posted on social media, the label condemned the accusations and announced steps to sever ties with Tapia and his work. The statement indicated that the label is taking the matter seriously and intends to continue monitoring developments as more information becomes available.
